Job Industry Risks in Ohio
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, between 1999-2008, there were over 1,300 cases of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos-related diseases in Ohio. The majority of these incidents were direct result of people working around asbestos on job site for prolonged periods of time. For example, in 2004, Honey Creek Contracting Company was bought out. It was well-known that the building was riddled with asbestos prior to the sale, yet the new owner, David Sugar, along with management, allowed people to remove the dangerous fibers without the proper protection.
Per Ohio State law and the Clean Air Act, anyone working around asbestos must not only be qualified, but must also wear protective gearing and only work around the fibers for a certain amount of time each day. As a result, Honey Creek was fined a substantial amount of money and ordered to pay for medical checkups for each worker.
Another company in Ohio, the Scotts Company in Marysville, was the largest processing facility for vermiculite, a silicate mineral containing asbestos. As the Scotts Company processed vermiculite, thousands upon thousands asbestos fibers were released, placing not only workers at danger, but residents who lived in the area. In 1980, the EPA ordered the facility to be shut down. However, the risks for developing an asbestos-related disease was already significant as the facility was in operation from 1967-1980.
